Mt. Mount Athos (a location based data exploration)
ENA was queried for records from 2020–2025 in the Mount Athos peninsula, revealing 9 sequences of Lathyrus oleraceus - all full plastomes highly informative for phylogenetics and gene-flow studies. Two records with incorrect geographical coordinates were identified and flagged. GBIF data for the same region provided complementary human-observation records, including insect occurrences, enabling spatial comparisons of genetic diversity and species distribution. Mt. Voras and Mt. Paiko (a taxon/location based data browsing)
A search for Fagus sylvatica (beech) ENA records in Greece returned only two records lacking geographical coordinates. Thus, these records are shown at the country centre. By cross-referencing the metadata, the actual collection sites on Mt. Paiko and Mt. Voras could be identified, located in one of Europe’s most important glacial refugia. A broader plant query for the area, combined with GBIF-reported insect records, illustrated how Odyssey supports multi-taxon spatial genetic analyses and habitat evaluation. Norway’s Ulva (a taxon/location based data exploration)
Searching ENA for plant records along the Norwegian coast (2023–2025) revealed Ulva sp. sequences for the rbcl barcoding marker (Ulva sp are green tubular macroalga common in coastal habitats). GBIF observations for the same area provided additional biotope context. This use case demonstrated how Odyssey supports phylogenetic studies, ecotype identification, and conservation strategy development for coastal species. Cretan Sea (a location based data browsing)
A search spanning 2000–2026 in the Cretan Sea returned 40 COI marker gene sequences of Hermodice carunculata (bearded fireworm), two mitochondrial D-loop sequences of Prionace glauca (blue shark), six 16S rRNA sequences of copepods, and one ND1 sequence of Pelophylax cretensis (Cretan frog, an endemic endangered species, incorrect coordinates). GBIF queries for the same region revealed hundreds of human observations for marine fauna, such as perciformes, atheriniformes, and cetaceans. Interactive record filtering via the Odyssey Table tab enabled targeted, taxon-level biodiversity assessment. This functionality allowed records with incorrect geographical coordinates, like certain GBIF-reported plants, to be excluded from the map display. Please follow this story in the presentation below:
