Dr. Fotis Psomopoulos | Senior Researcher
Dr Fotis Psomopoulos is a Senior Researcher (Associate Professor level) at the Institute of Applied Biosciences (INAB), at the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), in Thessaloniki Greece. His research interests lie at the intersection of Bioinformatics and Machine Learning, primarily working on the design and implementation of data mining algorithms for knowledge extraction from large datasets in Life Sciences. In this context, he was selected to be an EGI Champion on Life Sciences in 2013, an RDA-EU Ambassador for Bioinformatics in 2019, and he is currently co-leading the ELIXIR Machine Learning Focus Group. In addition to his research activities, he is particularly active in training efforts and initiatives (such as the Carpentries and GOBLET). He is the Training Coordinator of ELIXIR-GR, a member of the ELIXIR Training Platform Executive Committee, and a member of the EOSC Association Research Careers, Recognition and Credit Task Force. Finally, he is a strong advocate of FAIR and Open Science; as applied in research software and machine learning in particular. He is a co-author of the Open Science Training Handbook and the Greek National Plan for Open Science, and is leading the ELIXIR Software Best Practices group, with a notable outcome the ELIXIR Software Management Plan, and the RDA FAIR for Machine Learning Interest Group.
Elena Bakoglidou | Project Manager
Elena Bakoglidou is a Project Manager at the Institute of Applied Biosciences (INAB) within the Center for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH). She holds a B.Sc. in Political Science and an MBA in International Business. With eight years of professional experience, Elena specializes in the administrative and financial management, as well as the implementation of EU-funded projects in both public and private sectors.
Dr. Konstantinos Kyritsis | Postdoctoral Researcher
Konstantinos Kyritsis, PhD, is working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Applied Biosciences in the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (INAB/CERTH). He received his BSc in Biology, and his MSc in “Biotechnology and Molecular Diagnostics” from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). During his studies, he completed a three-month Erasmus+ internship at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research, University of Copenhagen. He received a scholarship for his doctorate from the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI) in 2017, and completed his thesis, entitled “Systematic Analysis of the Expression of Ribosomal Protein Genes”, at the School of Pharmacy AUTH, in 2021. His research interests are currently focused on studying molecular mechanisms and unveiling patterns of functional significance by applying methods of statistical analysis as well as machine learning algorithms to Next-generation sequencing (NGS) data. Furthermore, his interests include developing bioinformatic tools and pipelines for integrating and visualizing heterogenous bio-data.
Dr. Nikolaos (Nikos) Pechlivanis | Postdoctoral Researcher
Dr. Nikos Pechlivanis works as a Bioinformatics engineer at the Institute of Applied Biosciences in the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas. He holds an engineering diploma of Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) where he completed his thesis entitle “Genomic data integration for facilitating machine learning applications”. His research focuses on studying machine learning algorithms and computational techniques with respect to their corresponding applications on genomic and meta-genomic data. In addition to his research, Nikolas supports open source/science principles, in support of reusability and accessibility of scientific results. Moreover, he is interested in web development mostly working on server-side scripting by applying data wrangling and analysis techniques.
Dr. Theodosia (Sissy) Charitou | Postdoctoral Researcher
Dr. Theodosia Charitou is a multidisciplinary researcher with a Ph.D. in Systems Biology and Bioinformatics from University College Dublin – School of Medicine, an M.Sc. in Bioinformatics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and a B.Sc. in Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics from the University of Thessaly. With over a decade of international experience in Ireland, Greece, Australia, the UK, and the USA—including postdoctoral positions at Massachusetts General Hospital (Harvard Medical School), the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, and the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute and EMBL Australia, she specializes in integrating multi-omics data (WGS, RNA-seq, metagenomics, proteomics, pharmacogenomics) to uncover disease mechanisms. Her current research focuses on microbiome–drug–genetic interactions, single-cell omics, and systems-level analyses of complex diseases. A former Senior Lecturer at the University of Thessaly, she has excelled in research, teaching, and mentoring across computer science, molecular biology, and biomedical data science. As co-founder and CSO of maMEDS P.C., she leads HealthTech innovation and R&D in medication adherence and pharmaceutical care. Fluent in Greek and English, and proficient in Spanish, French, and Italian, Dr. Charitou enjoys traveling, exploring museums and art galleries, swimming, practicing martial arts, horse riding, and playing the piano.
Styliani-Christina (Stella) Fragkouli | PhD Candidate
Stella holds a B.Sc. in Physics and an M.Sc. in Digital Media and Computational Intelligence, both obtained from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh). Currently, she is pursuing a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics at the University of Athens (UoA) with focus on the intersection of genetics and computational methods. She also works at the Institute of Applied Biosciences (INAB) within the Center for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) under the supervision of Dr. Psomopoulos. Her research interests encompass a wide range of topics, including applications of artificial intelligence in various domains, variant calling methods for detetcting genetic lesions and the generation and evaluation of synthetic data.
Vasileios Vasileiou | PhD Candidate
Vasileios Vasileiou is a Phd candidate, working as a Bioinformatician at the Institute of Applied Bioscience (INAB) in the Center for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH). Overall, his research interests focus on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, specializing in Systems Biology and Multi-omics Integration analyses. He holds a BSc degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics at Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH), while he obtained his MSc degree in Bioinformatics at the University of Birmingham (UoB).
Konstantinos Kardamiliotis | PhD Candidate
Konstantinos Kardamiliotis is a PhD candidate and also works as a research assistant at the Institute of Applied Biosciences (INAB) at the Center for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH). He holds a B.Sc. in Biology and a M.Sc. in Precision Medicine, both obtained from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh). He is interested in design and development of bioinformatics tools and pipelines.
Sofoklis Keisaris | Research Assistant
Sofoklis Keisaris works as a research assistant at the Institute of Applied Biosciences(INAB) in the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas(CERTH). He received his BSc in Biology from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki(AUTH) with aspects on Ecology and Conservation Biology. After having cooperated with Hellenic Center of Marine Research (CERTH), he found interest in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. He is keen on developing bioinformatics tools and pipelines for a wide variety of biological data.
Anastasia Anastasiadou | Research Assistant
Anastasia (Natasa) Anastasiadou is a research assistant, working as a Bioinformatician at the Institute of Applied Biosciences (INAB) of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH). She received her BSc in Biochemistry and Biotechnology from the University of Thessaly where she completed her thesis entitle “Study of genetic variations in patients with haematological malignancies” in collaboration with INAB. Subsequently, she obtained a M.Sc in Translational Research in Biomedicine from the Democritus University of Thrace. During her master’s thesis titled ‘Characterization of TP53 gene mutations in patients with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia,’ she became interested in Bioinformatics. Currently, her main focus is on analyzing and visualizing NGS data, aiming to extract meaningful biological insights. She is also experienced in creating interactive web applications and websites, making data exploration and visualization more accessible and user-friendly for researchers.
